Wellness Is About Peace, Not Perfection

A peaceful stone pathway at the Sanctuary in Punta Cana with a gentle stream leading toward the turquoise ocean, surrounded by tropical greenery, symbolizing the journey to finding peace and wellness.

After more than 27 years in healthcare, I've realized something important:

Wellness isn't about chasing perfection. It's about finding peace.

It's about taking care of yourself one small choice at a time.

Those small choices add up.

Peace keeps our minds balanced, our bodies healthier, and our spirits stronger.

Mental health is so important.

Have you ever been driving with your kids in the car? The music is playing, everyone is talking at once, and your mind just feels... full?

Sometimes we simply need quiet.

We need a space where we can breathe.

A space where we can find ourselves again after a stressful day.

Our own "me time."

For years, after leaving the hospital or finishing a community health education event, I often felt completely drained.

Instead of immediately calling someone or turning on the news, I would put on relaxation music.

Yes... spa music.

I'd take three slow, deep breaths.

In...

Out...

Again.

Within just a few minutes, I could literally feel my body begin to reset.

That little ritual became my transition between work and home.

I've learned that we all need something that helps us reset.

Something that brings us back to ourselves.

Now, I make time to slow down.

I stop to notice the fresh air.

I listen to the birds.

I enjoy the sunshine.

I sit quietly with Bentley curled up beside me.

Those simple moments give me peace.

And peace gives me grace.

The dictionary defines wellness as "the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal."

To me, wellness is much more than physical health.

It's caring for myself mentally.

Emotionally.

Physically.

Spiritually.

Wellness looks different for everyone.

What fills my cup may not fill yours.

And that's perfectly okay.

This is one area of life where it's perfectly acceptable to make it all about YOU.

So what does wellness look like for me?

Every morning, before my feet hit the floor, I take a few deep breaths.

I tell myself:

"Today is going to be a great day."

That simple thought helps set the tone for everything that follows.

Then there's Bentley.

For those who don't know him, Bentley is my little Yorkshire Terrier—and my baby.

Seeing his happy little face every morning instantly makes me smile.

He reminds me to appreciate the little things.

That's wellness, too.

Wellness doesn't have to be complicated.

It can be found in simple daily rituals like:

  • Going for a walk

  • Drinking more water

  • Reading a devotional

  • Spending time in prayer

  • Sitting on the porch with your morning coffee

  • Feeling the sunshine on your face

  • Calling a friend who makes you laugh

  • Taking a few minutes to simply slow down and breathe

Remember...

You don't have to have everything figured out today.

One small step is enough.

I've always believed in taking baby steps.

Being realistic.

Being kind to yourself.

That's how lasting wellness begins.

My Hope for You

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this, it's this:

You don't have to be perfect to be well.

Give yourself permission to slow down.

Take a deep breath.

Choose one small healthy habit today.

Then another tomorrow.

Your journey doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Find what brings you peace.

Because wellness isn't about perfection.

It's about peace.

With gratitude,

Steph
